Day 14: 5/20/11

All of the plants have unfolded and a few are starting to get second sets of leaves, although none of those have fully come in yet.

Day 12: 5/18/11

No pictures today because I didn't take my camera out on the porch before it got dark. But! In pot #3, where I was waiting on 1 sprout to come up, there are 2 new sprouts. I guess I planted 4 seeds in that one instead of 3! More tomatoes is always a good thing, though!

I'll probably post pictures tomorrow. The little plants will be a bit bigger then anyway. After this, I don't think I'll be posting pictures until they start growing new leaves.

Day 11: 5/17/11

The last little plant in pot #4 is up, and the second one has come up pot #3. Only one more little plant in pot #3 and all my seeds will have sprouted!

Pot #3, plant #2. Just waiting on the last seed in this pot.
Pot #4 with the second plant, which has 3 leaves instead of 2 like all the others. It's special. I think I'll name him Fred. And over to the right there's the 3rd sprout coming up!

Day 10: 5/16/11

Well, almost all my little plants have come up now. Still waiting for two in pot #3, but a second plant is now up in pot #4 and I see a little bit of a 3rd sprout coming up, too. Pots 1 & 2 have all three plants up now.

Pot #2 with plant #3!

Pot #4 with plant #2 there in the center, seed husk still attached.

Day 9: 5/15/11

There are now sizable little plants in all of my pots!!

Pot #1. These were barely breaking the surface yesterday.

Pot #2. There was only the tall one in there yesterday.

Pot #3. I didn't see ANYTHING in there yesterday. It still has the seed husk stuck on it. If it doesn't come off in a few days, I'll see if I can pull it off.

Pot #4. There was nothing yesterday, and now there's that seedling toward the back and, if you can see it, the little sprout in the front.

Pots 1-4 front to back.

Pots 4-1 front to back.

I just put this one up cause it had horses in the background.

Day 8: 5/14/11

I originally wasn't going to post anything until next Friday, until I saw how far my little plants had come in ONE DAY!!

This is the first pot that had nothing yesterday. This was before I watered it.

After I watered it, I uncovered the two other sprouts!!
This is the second pot that had barely sprouted yesterday. Now it has two leaves and is much taller.

I still don't see anything in the other two pots, but the one group of seeds had surfaced a few days ago and so didn't get a very good chance to sprout.

Day 7: 5/13/11

Finally I have pictures of my tomato pots! One of them has a little teeny sprout! I saw a root on one seed that had surfaced, so I put it back under soil. All the seeds in one pot had surfaced and none had sprouted, so I put them all back under the soil in hopes that they'll sprout soon.

These are pics of the little sprout.

And this is my little set up.

Day 4: 5/9/11

Today I went to check on my tomatoes and see where the seeds were, since I don't have a spray bottle yet and I wasn't sure how badly my watering had displaced them. The seeds that had wandered  put back toward the center of the pots. Also, there were all these little bugs that looked like some kind of tiny stinging insects all over the railing of the porch and few crawling around my pots. They didn't look like they were really interesting in the plants, perhaps just the water in the soil. I think it's too early in the season for swarming ants, and their legs didn't look like ant legs. I don't think they'll bother my tomatoes, and I really don't want to have to mess with pesticides. I might put a few ant traps out there if they give me reason to think they're ants. Nothing coming up yet, but it hasn't been long enough for that anyway. I'll post at least 1 picture on Friday, regardless of whether or not anything has come up.

Day 1: 5/6/2011

I planted my tomatoes today. They are roma tomatoes. I used 4 jiffy pots in a window box with a vegetable fertilizer spike busted in half on either side of each pot. Where I have the window box (hanging on the front porch rail outside my window) gets full sun for at least the last half of the day if not 2/3 or 3/4 of the day. I don't have any pictures this week since it would just be of pots and soil. I will take and post pics next week regardless of whether or not anything has come up, although I should have at least a little green poking up by then. At some point later this week I may post a picture of my homemade (tiny) tomato cage.

Oh yeah. Because I would like to have 4 plants in a window box, I plan to try and keep them pretty small. Plus, if it's not putting its energy into stem, I should theoretically get better tomatoes. Basically, this is going to be an experiment in bonsai tomatoes. And if not technically actual bonsai, still tiny tomato plants.
